Pegboards are another fun and creative way to create more space. You can add these boards on walls and doors to create flexible storage space for whatever you need. Don’t want to spend too much on decor accents for your cloffice space? Take a cue from blogger Yaro Zuarich, who gave his cloffice a personal touch with baskets-turned-pendants. He thrifted the baskets for $0.50 each (what a find!) and then used metallic paint and hot glue to turn them into hanging lights for his little space. He also hung a pegboard in his workspace, which offers a versatile solution for storing all sorts of work essentials.
For more than 14 years, I’ve been helping renters find their perfect home. When I’m not writing, I enjoy spending time with my two sons, playing video games, and reading British mystery novels. If you have to have an office in your bedroom, having a curtain you can draw so you can relax in the space would be key. When buying a lightbulb, check the number of lumens — the higher the lumens, the brighter the bulb. Also, check the color temperature, measured on the Kelvin scale and noted with a K. No, this isn’t the office with a window you had hoped for, but that doesn’t mean cloffice life has to be dull.
Get a swivel chair to fit under the desktop
A plant is always a great way to brighten up your workspace. Decor expert Alexandra Gater shares her tips on how to create a budget-friendly WFH set-up, no matter how much space you’ve got. “Personalize the space with pictures and items that are meaningful to you,” Marx recommends. This can help you feel like your home office is truly your own. This can include a combination of overhead light, focused light (like a desk lamp), and, if possible, access to natural light through a window. I did this years ago, but used an old solid core door for the desktop.
- Once all paint has dried and all moulding and shelves have been installed, carefully move the desk into the closet and onto the supports.
- To make the chair more comfortable, pop a pillow on it.
From minimalist floating shelves to rows of perfect book-height planks on brackets, there will be a shelf design perfect for your space. The basic setup requires a desktop surface, storage, and a chair or stool, which can all easily fit inside a reach-in bedroom closet or a linen closet in the hallway. At the end of the day, simply close the closet doors to conceal your workstation and keep your home looking clutter-free. These smart and stylish cloffice ideas will show you how to outfit the space with furniture, lighting, storage, and more to create an efficient spot to work from home. The doorless design in this IG post features a wide desktop, as well as several drawers and cabinets, making it truly feel like a small office.
Design the side area
“Most reach-in closets are about 2 feet deep, so a shallow desk can slide right in,” says professional organizer Kay Patterson. “Some fun wallpaper or cute desk decor will make the space more inviting.” If your walk-in closet has windows, consider how much life houseplants can bring to an office. Not only do they look beautiful, they add oxygen to the space and can be relatively low-maintenance.

How to turn an apartment closet into an office
If you need more storage for your desk, consider building a built in desk with desk cabinets instead. And you can still build it in a closet to save floor space. Once you have the boards cut, level and drill the supports into each stud. Butcher Block is EXTREMELY heavy, so you want to drill the supports into as many studs as possible. When leveling the supports, it is important to level the boards on the wall AND with each other (as shown in the right photo above). If you’re supports are not level with each other, your desk itself will not be level.
The sides of the closet are perfect for additional storage. Think about adding some organizers or installing some floating shelves. Small homes and apartments can lead to efficient and creative uses for space, like these closets that have been transformed into miniature offices.
Tap the corners down with a hammer to ensure they are laying flat. Cut a piece of 1×3 board to the length of the front of the desk. Secure it to the front of the plywood with wood glue and finishing nails. And since you have a few extra feet of inexpensive 2×2 boards, it doesn’t cost anything to add this extra support. Simply remove the door entirely and hang a little curtain rod at the top of the door frame. You can opt for a built-in that you can conceal, or pick up a basic tension bar at any craft supply store. The final look is less polished, but will cost a fraction of the price of installing a new closet door.
